A little project...

Cape Forchu, Nova Scotia

Two years ago I moved back to my home province of Nova Scotia, having spent much of my adult life living in a small town in New Brunswick. I loved that small town, but the many years I spent travelling throughout New Brunswick made me realize how little I really knew about my home province, outside of Halifax and where I was raised in rural Cape Breton. To get better acquainted I came up with a little project, embarking on a trek to learn more about Nova Scotia by exploring its 26 incorporated towns.

So here's the plan. Throughout the warmer months this year I will visit each of the province's incorporated towns where I hope to accomplish the following:

1. Take a selfie with the town's welcome sign

2. Check out the visitor's centre

3. Visit a museum or heritage centre

4. Explore a public space – like a park, trail or boardwalk

5. Eat at a local restaurant

6. Drink a locally produced spirit – try a sampling from a local brewery, cidery, distillery or winery

7. Find some public art

8. Acquire some town swag – like a postcard, magnet or snowglobe (because snowglobes are awesome)

The goal at the end of this project will be to gain some perspective on what it means to be Nova Scotian. If you'd like to come along for the ride – check back every Sunday and Wednesday and I'll tell you about my latest ventures.

And here's a clue about the first town – it was featured on the 1954 version of Canada's $50 dollar bill. 

A little bit of trivia: Nova Scotia is Canada's second smallest province and accounts for less than 0.6% of Canada's total area, but it's still larger in size than one third of all countries on earth, including Switzerland.
